The Nerdery strikes again

On Saturday of this last weekend my husband participated in the Polar Bear Plunge. For anyone unfamiliar with the plunge, you donate money to an organization and then you get to jump in a frozen lake. Fun huh? Well apparently it is; I was there as a spectator and it was actually a really good time! That is until I lost feeling in my three smallest toes! He went with a group of co-workers from the Nerdery, and all of those people are just awesome. I had a blast talking to his co-workers and watching them freeze their butts off after they got out. But the consensus was that it actually wasn’t that cold! As strange as it seems, the water was warmer than the air that day so it must have been a relief to get into the water after waiting in line! It stayed in the single digits all of Saturday so the water was at least 20 degrees warmer than the air. The group got to jump in a hot tub for awhile after the jump so it paid off for them. Also there was beer and pizza for the post party! Good times but I’m still looking forward to spring!

One mans trash…

Anyone who knows me, knows that I love thrift store shopping, rummage sales and SAVERS!!!! So Wednesday is my go to day to go to Savers because they offer a student discount. If you wanna save money, why not wait to get your biggest discount right? So I went last night and found some awesome deals one of which is pictured below. I’m not real big on seasonal decorating; I like the cottage-ey look of my house year round. But if I find something cute and seasonal, you’d better believe I’ll put it up somewhere. Especially if I find it on sale! So this little gem is hanging on my front door. It’s super cute; glittery and has some branchy stuff wrapped around it. The wreath behind it is made out of cute little easter eggs. AND I got if for the low, low price of….wait for it….$3.99! I couldn’t have made it for that cheap. Plus mine probably wouldn’t have turned out this cute! Just wanted to share…and remind people that there’s more than junk at the thrift stores!

Little pear pincushion

I got this idea from my latest Crafts n’Things magazine. They had a funky colored pear pin cushion in there, and me, being snowed in, is bored to heck! So I sorted through my craft room(which my sister organized for me back in January!) and found some cool fabric to create my own pin cushion. The pattern was super easy to cut out and sew, although getting all those small pieces together was a little challenging, I think anyone can make this. I always see patterns for crafts that I think I don’t have supplies for but I think if you have any sort of craft collection, you can find something that will work for any pattern. Don’t have the specialty paints for a certain craft project? Use acrylic paints and mix the colors that you want! Don’t have felt for that sewing project? Use a scrap piece of fabric and fray the edges! Improvise! I’m not big in the money and some of these craft project require a ton of specialty products to make them. With a little imagination you can probably make the same projects with stuff you have in your house. This is especially useful when you are snowed in, can’t get to a craft store and bored out of your mind!

Snowmageddon 2011

Ok guys. Not sure where everyone’s at who is reading this right now but I’m in Minneapolis. It’s been snowing for over 24 hours now and we’re pushing 13+ inches of snow right now…and it’s still snowing! My clothesline is over 6 feet tall and we’re forming a small mountain of snow that has finally hit the clothesline. We had melting temperatures for most of last week, but it wouldn’t be the midwest if there wasn’t that end of the winter snowstorm. We’ve shoveled five times in the last day and there’s still about 2 inches on our sidewalk. Oy vay! That’s a lot of snow. I’m just hoping it stops over night so I can get back to work tomorrow. Doesn’t this photo make it look just lovely outside?

Easy to please

With Valentines Day behind us, I thought I would share my get out of jail free card with everyone out there. My husband absolutely love my mom’s lemon bars and it’s usually an easy fix for birthdays, anniversaries and any other holiday that I may have not purchased a gift for. My mom usually makes sure that there are lemon bars around when we come home for the holidays. Unfortunately, I love these bars almost as much as Anthony, so I rarely make them because I will typically eat 5 of them before I realize that I have lemon bars and powdered sugar all over my face. Here’s the recipe!

1 cup butter

1/2 cup powdered sugar

2 cups flour

Mix together and pat into an ungreased 9×13 pan. Bake for 20 minutes at 350F. Remove from oven and set aside.

4 eggs

1/4 tsp. salt

1/4 cup lemon juice

1/4 cup of flour

2 cups sugar

1 tsp. baking powder

Mis and pour over baked crust. Bake for 25 minutes at 350F. Sprinkle with powdered sugar when cool.

These bars are amazing and very simple to make. They are sure to win over theĀ  lemon lover in your home!

Tropical curtains

After holding onto the fabric for over a month now, I finally finished these tropical curtains for my neighbor. I’ve been busy with all the party planning and cooking and such so I didn’t get around to it right away. I always get stressed out about making something, hemming something, anything that I do for someone else. I always think that I’ll ruin something and this project was no different! They loved them so that’s all that matters! Now that my parties and projects are done what do I do with my time! Spring is on its way so I’m sure I’ll be busy making my house beautiful on the outside once the snow melts. I can’t wait!

Pure Romance

Well it’s been awhile since my last post. I’ve been busy party planning and being sick! I had a very successful Pure Romance party last night. It was so much fun! The woman who presented everything is a neighbor and she’s awesome! She knows her stuff and she was totally professional but still a lot of fun! I had about 10 ladies over here and I made a bunch of food; ham wrapped asparagus, olive bites, little smokies(wouldn’t have been a sexy party with little wieners!) chocolate covered bananas, meringues and baked caprese salad. There is NO food left today! That always makes me feel good when I know that people want to eat my food! I get that from my mother! I’m still looking for the motivation to clean up the kitchen, but then again it’s barely 8 in the morning! This might be my last party for awhile. It’s been a busy couple weeks. I think I’ll focus on fixing up the house for a few months and then resume partying when the weather gets a bit better. Maybe I can finally get my folks down here to meet some of my friends!
